What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a gel that is injected into the skin in order to add volume to lips and lift up wrinkles around the mouth and nasolabial folds. Restylane® consists of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance already present in your body. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is non-animal derived and treatment does not require an allergy test.
How is a Restylane® treatment performed?
Before the Restylane® injection, a dental block may be performed for maximum comfort. The Restylane® gel is then injected into your skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, Restylane®adds volume and shape to the treated area.
How long will a Restylane® procedure take?
A Restylane® treatment is a very quick and easy process. No pre-test is required, so the treatment can be performed immediately. A treatment generally takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The time differs depending on the correction you wish to achieve.
What areas can be treated with Restylane®?
Restylane® can be used for smoothing out folds and wrinkles and enhancing lips. The most common areas are the nasolabial folds (from the edge of the nostril to the angle of the mouth), fine lines around the mouth, upper and lower lips, and between the eyes.
Does a Restylane® treatment hurt?
Before the Restylane® is injected, a dental block with lidocaine is administered into the gums, numbing the area to be treated. After the dental block is given, the procedure is virtually painless. Once the treatment is completed, ice is applied to the area to reduce swelling and soreness.
What are the possible side effects to using Restylane®?
Some possible side effects that may occur after a Restylane® treatment are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, itching, and tenderness at the injection site. These side effects typically resolve within a few days after the treatment.
Can I use Restylane® if I had a laser treatment or chemical peel?
If you recently had some other type of facial treatment, it is recommended to wait until the treated area is completely healed and the skin has normalized (usually 4-6 weeks) before you undergo a Restylane® treatment.
How long does the effect of a Restylane® treatment last?
Restylane® typically lasts up to 6 months or longer. The length of time, however, is very individual and depends on many factors, such as the structure of your skin, lifestyle, age, and the degree of correction required. Experience indicates that touch-up and follow-up Restylane®treatments will add to the duration.
How will my skin look without follow-up Restylane® treatments?
The correction will gradually disappear until your skin looks like it did before the Restylane® treatment. Follow-up treatments will help you maintain your correction.
How is Restylane® different from BOTOX®?
Restylane® is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, BOTOX® is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products.
How is Restylane® different than other hyaluronic acid- based products?
Unlike other hyaluronic acid based products, only Restylane® is non-animal based. This quality virtually eliminates any risk of animal based disease transmission or allergic reaction.
What is Perlane®?
Perlane®, like Restylane®, is composed of hylaronic acid. It is a larger molecule typically used in deeper folds, and is FDA approved for 9 months.
